Trompe l'oeil &Murals
Friar's Head, Akebar Park
Function room with vaulted ceiling.
The brief was to create a neo-classical piece. From the renaissance period with elements from Greek mythology. Zephyrus the God of wind and nymph are seen to be blowing roses and scallop shell to shore, which is taken from Botticelli's "Birth of Venus".
The sleeping/drunk cherub and satyrs - mythological faun-like creatures familiar from classical sources, are Bacchus's drunken companions.
The conch shell, fruit, grapes etc. and wine all signify food and drink, hence the engraved quote:
"Haste thee nymph and bring with thee jest and youthful jollity"
A variety of subjects are incorporated into this piece including a rare night heron.
The room represents and old chapel with faux sandstone slabbed walls and ornate arched doorways.
